Hello Desert Sky Family,
My name is Scott Larter, and I’m honored to serve as the new Principal of Desert Sky Middle School. I’m excited to join the Thunderbolt family and become part of this amazing community.
I’ve been in education since 2007 and joined the Deer Valley Unified School District in 2011. Over the years, I’ve served as a teacher, behavior coach, athletic coordinator, coach, dean of students, and most recently, assistant principal—an experience that led to being named DVUSD Assistant Principal of the Year in 2024. Outside of school, I’m a husband, dad to two young children, and pet parent to a lively crew of two dogs and seven cats. I enjoy traveling, visiting national parks and Disney destinations, watching movies, and cheering on the Suns, Cardinals, and D-Backs.
My Core values—relationships, collaboration, and growth—guide everything I do. At Desert Sky, we believe in supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—in a safe environment where students are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and grow.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our teaming model, which gives students a true sense of connection and belonging. Each grade-level team is made up of dedicated teachers who work closely together to support a shared group of students. This model helps every child feel known, supported, and surrounded by adults who care deeply about their success—not just in the classroom, but in life.
At Desert Sky, we know it takes a village. That’s why we work in partnership with families and the community to ensure our students have every opportunity to succeed. From strong academics to meaningful support systems to a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, our students are encouraged to get involved and take pride in being part of something bigger.
I’m honored to lead a campus that puts students first—and I can’t wait to see all that we’ll accomplish together this year. GO BOLTS!
Hello All,
This is my fourth year as Assistant Principal at Desert Sky Middle School. Before stepping into this role, I taught both elementary and middle school, and I’ve always loved building strong relationships with students. I enjoy talking with them, getting to know them as a person, and helping them grow into their best selves. I’m passionate about creating a safe, respectful school environment and supporting both students and staff every day.

Anonymous Safe Schools Reporting
Anonymous Safe School Hotline 623-376-3262 24 hours/7 days a week
The DVUSD has established an Anonymous Hotline for students, parents, educators, or community members to report rumors or information on criminal activity on campuses or against Deer Valley students. Deer Valley is encouraging any information on possible crimes or violent activity to be reported immediately, even if the information is merely a rumor. These calls can be made anonymously, as the district's goals are to maintain safe, secure campuses. In addition, calls on suspected drug use, vandalism, or thefts are welcomed to help hold accountable those who commit criminal acts. When appropriate, information from the Safe Schools Hotline will be shared with local law enforcement. The hotline will be monitored throughout every school day, but should not be considered a replacement for 911. In an emergency or situation requiring immediate police action, (i.e., fire, crime in progress, etc.) a call should be made to 911 to make an immediate report to the proper authorities. Maintaining safe campuses requires the efforts of everyone in the district, including students, parents, educators, and support staff. Safety is an ongoing commitment that is possible only through the efforts of every member of the campus community. Your call could make the difference!

Nurse

Mrs. Bowlus
Hello Thunderbolts!
Welcome to my page! I'm Nurse Patty and I've had the honor of being the school nurse at Desert Sky Middle School for quite some time. Originally, I was here from 2006-2012 when my youngest child graduated from Deer Valley High School. I did other things for a few years but decided in 2016 that I just missed my Sky family too much and so here I am again! I've got quite an extensive background (med/surg hospital nursing, ICU, Maricopa County Jail System, skilled facilities, etc). And while I've learned something everywhere I've been, I know without a doubt that school nursing is where I will be until I retire (which is quite a few years from now!) I grew up in North Dakota but have been in Arizona since 1982, so I'm kind of a "native" now. I have two grown children (Rick and Brittany--the years go by quickly!) and a dog (Sammy) and cat (Johnny) at home. I love to spend my free time doing crafts and creating things just for the fun of it. I still have my saxophone from high school (yes, it's pretty old!) and break it out at home now and then to keep my skills up. I hope you enjoy your time here at Desert Sky and that you will learn like I have that Once a Thunderbolt Always a Thunderbolt!!
Stay healthy and wash your hands!!

School Health Services
School Health Services
School is a healthy environment. The nurse promotes a positive wellness environment to give each student the best possible opportunity to learn and reach their potential. The nurse is the consultant for students, parents and educational staff members concerning health issues and problems. He or she may, at times, suggest further medical follow up when a health problem is suspected.
The Health Center provides first aide and medical care primarily for illness or injuries that occur during the school day. It is not a primary care facility like a doctor’s office. The nurse is, however, qualified to collaborate with you and your child’s physician to provide an educational environment in which your child can learn and thrive. While the nurse does not make a medical diagnosis or prescribe medication or treatment, medication and treatment prescribed by a physician may be given in the health office.
Disease Prevention/Immunizations: Written proof of compliance with immunization requirements is a part of the registration process in Arizona Schools. State and Federal Law mandates that school-age children be immunized to prevent certain diseases. If you are unsure of the requirements for immunizations, see your doctor, visit the School Health Center or call the Maricopa County Health Dept at (602)-506-6767 for locations of clinics and hours of operation. Immunizations are free of charge for children under the age of 18. Exemption forms are available from the nurse if needed.
Parent and Emergency Contacts/Health History: Parents are required to complete Emergency Contact and Health History Forms for each of their children every year. These forms contain vital information should your child become ill or injured at school. Students will be released to ONLY those persons indicated on the form. Photo ID is required to pick up any child during the day at school. Please make sure to update information with the school as soon as possible if you have a change in phone number.
Student Illness: If a student feels ill during the school day, they should report their complaint to the classroom teacher for referral to the nurse. Students are not to contact their parents directly via cell phone regarding illness unless prior arrangements have been made with the nurse. Please keep your child home if they have fever, diarrhea, vomiting, deep cough, or a potentially communicable disease. Children with a fever of 100 degrees or more must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school. If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness, please contact the school nurse. Please call your child’s doctor for advice on an ill child. Do not send ill students to school to be evaluated by the nurse.
Medication: Over-the-counter medications are not available in the Health Center. Tylenol, ibuprofen, Calamine, Neosporin, topical or oral Benadryl, cough drops, antacids or any like remedies are not stocked. Students are not permitted to have medication in their possession at any time without a specific prior written arrangement with the nurse.
Prescription medications must be in an original prescription container labeled for the student with a current date. The label must state directions that coincide with the request being made by the parent. A signed physician's order for school administration must be on file before prescription medications can be administered.
MORE INFORMATION TO COME
Over-the-counter Medications needed by students during the school day must be checked in to the Health Center by a parent/guardian. Requests must be in agreement with the manufacturer’s directions or have a superseding physician’s order. Herbal preparations must have a doctor’s order. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to pick up any unused or discontinued medications promptly from the health center. At the end of the school year, any medication remaining in the Health Center will be discarded.
PE Excuses: Students requesting to be excused from P.E. must bring a note signed by their parents or guardian to the Nurse. The Nurse will then write an “excused from P.E.” pass for the student to take to P.E. Any request for an excuse for three or more PE classes must be accompanied by a physician’s written order. All injuries requiring any type of orthopedic support or device on campus must be reported and cleared through the Health Center.
Chronic Health Conditions: If your child has been diagnosed with a chronic health condition please contact the nurse immediately. They will inform you of the DVUSD protocols/procedures necessary to ensure a healthy and safe environment for your child during the school day.
Immunizations
It is very important that all students have written proof of all required immunizations, or a valid exemption on file at school. When initially enrolling your child, please bring an updated copy of his/her immunization record to Desert Sky. If you receive a note or message of "Inadequate Immunizations" for your child, please complete these by the date indicated. Failure to compete this in a timely manner is a violation of the law and your child may be excluded from attending school until you comply with the law. Below is a link to the Arizona School Immunization Requirements, Kindergarten thru 12th grade. If your child needs any immunizations they are available free of charge through the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. There are several immunization clinics where children, from birth up to their 19th birthday, may get needed immunizations for no cost. Please contact the nurse if you need referral assistance.
About the Flu
COLD VS FLU
Influenza (flu) is a respiratory illness that is contagious and caused by influenza viruses. Flu season can vary and may start as early as October and continue through as late as May. However, we usually see it peak between December and February. Certain groups of people are at high risk for serious complications of the flu, including older people, young children and people that have certain health conditions. Each year there is an immunization for influenza (flu) that helps to prevent infection. Click on the link below for an easy to read chart that outlines the difference between a common cold and the flu. If you would like more information on influenza (flu), you may also find the information provided by the CDC helpful; just click on the link below.
Hearing and Vision Services
Hearing and Vision Screening
Hearing and vision screening is done for all seventh grade students, for all new (to district) students, and all students who receive services through the special education department. Parents/ guardians and teachers can request a screening for any student at any time when a concern arises. Referral letters are sent home to notify parents if the student has difficulties with any portion of the vision screening. Students who have difficulty with an initial hearing screening will be tested again in 10-30 school days. If they are still having difficulty hearing all the tones, the student will be referred to the school audiologist. Parent/ guardians will be notified with a referral letter. If you have questions regarding this process or do not wish for your child to be screened, please contact the nurse.
Head Lice
Concerned about lice?
Here is some general information about lice and what to look for. Scroll down if you are wondering what to do if your child has lice.
What to look for?
Head lice are gray, brown, or white and are so small they are difficult to see. Each female lays many eggs a day. The eggs are laid very close to the scalp on the hair shaft (usually within a fourth of an inch from the scalp). Eggs hatch within a week, the lice crawl on the hair and lay more eggs. Head lice feed by sucking blood. Itching and sores develop. Lice can fall on furniture or bedding. Other persons using these articles can be exposed to head lice. Head lice are usually passed person‑to‑person by using the same combs and brushes of infested persons.
How do I find head lice? Now what do I do?
1. Part the hair in several places. Look especially in the regions behind the ears and near the neck. Lice move very fast and, therefore, are often difficult to see; however, nits (eggs) can be found. Nits are very small, brown to white, pinhead‑sized droplets on the hair near the scalp. If you pass your finger over the nit it does not slide off the hair easily. (Do not confuse nits with dandruff.)
2. Inspect every family member for lice‑‑treating only one person may not get rid of the problem.
3. If lice or nits are found, call your doctor. There are several prescription and non‑prescription shampoos available such as NIX, KWELL, A‑200 PYRINATE, or RID. Treat all family members at the same time. The nits (eggs) must be removed by hand. The nits are easier to remove if a half‑and‑half solution of vinegar and water rinse is used on the hair after treatment.
4. Wash all bed linens, towels, combs, brushes, and clothing that may be infested.
5. Vacuum carpeting and furniture. House sprays are not indicated.
6. Notify your child's playmates.
Head Lice Check List:
1. Identify lice.
2. Treat lice in all family members.
3. Treat combs and brushes.
4. Wash clothing and bed linens.
5. Notify your child's playmates.
6. Vacuum carpeting and furniture.
7. Recheck head in 8‑10 days and RETREAT if any evidence of lice.
A second treatment is recommended 8‑10 days after first treatment to kill newly hatched lice. The other alternative would be to remove all nits, but such attempts are often not 100% successful. Removing nits is difficult since they are securely cemented to hair shafts, and a few may be overlooked in thick hair. (Removal of nits is required for student to return to classroom in this school district.)
The timing of the second treatment is critical. The pediculicide shampoo should be applied 8‑10 days after the first treatment. Applying the second treatment sooner would probably be a waste of time and money. Waiting 8 days allows all remaining viable eggs to hatch, and these hatched crawling lice are generally more susceptible to the shampoo than are the eggs. However, none of the newly hatched lice will reach reproductive age before the second treatment, and therefore no new eggs will be deposited.
The above information is from recommendations provided by the Maricopa County Health Department and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT ANY NEW CASE OF HEADLICE BE REPORTED TO THE SCHOOL NURSE SO THAT OTHER POSSIBLE EXPOSURES CAN BE CHECKED AND OTHER PARENTS ALERTED FOR ANY CONTINUED OUTBREAK. Be assured that the school nurse makes every effort to maintain confidentiality of known cases.
If you have any questions, you may call the school nurse or your family physician.
If your child has evidence of head lice:
Our district has a "no nit" (lice egg) requirement in order for your child to return to school. Proper treatment with appropriate shampoo or rinse labeled for controlling lice and removal of all eggs is necessary before your child returns.
Treatment will not kill every egg. Egg casings will remain on the hair shaft after treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to remove each egg or "nit" before the child returns to school. Since each egg could hatch and mature an egg‑laying female which could lay up to 500 eggs during its life cycle, the removal of all eggs helps to assure eradication of these human pests.
Your child may not attend school or ride the school bus until he/she has been cleared by the School Nurse.
To have your child readmitted to school you must:
Treat with proper product as per guidelines.
Be sure all eggs have been removed from the child's hair.
A responsible adult must bring your child to school. Do not send them to school unattended. Remember children determined to have had lice cannot ride the school bus until they have been cleared by the School Nurse. Your child must report directly to the Nurse's Office after 8:00am. Do not send a child to his/her regular classroom. The accompanying adult must remain until the child has been checked by the nurse and determined to be able to return to class. If any live lice or eggs are found, the child must be taken back home immediately to complete elimination of lice or eggs.
Pediculosis (head lice) is not a disease and with proper treatment your child should be able to return to school within one or two days.
Feel free to call the School Nurse at 602-467-6510 if you have any questions.
